Year 4 & 5

Class Structure

Year 4 and 5 are split into three different mixed classes.  They are as follows:

Kraken—Miss Kempton, Miss Brenton amd Mrs, Franklin

Hydra— Mr Burt, Mrs Webber and Mrs Derrick

Harpy—Miss Ruchat, Mr Dreier, Mrs Dennett and Ms Wiles.

The 3 classes are mixed Year 4 and 5 children and stay as a whole class for English and Topic activities.  We split into year groups for maths – Year 4 are taught by Mr. Burt and Ms. Stedman.  Year 5 are taught by Miss Ruchat and Miss Kempton.  There will also be lots of opportunities to work across the phase throughout the year.

PPA Afternoons

Our planning time is on Wednesday afternoon each week.  The classes complete a three-way rotation of activities (2 of these happen on a Wednesday—the other on Friday mornings).

Activity 1) PE with Mr Plow—Hydra and Kraken

Activity 2) Spanish with Miss Brenton—Harpy and Hydra

Activity 3) Library Skills with Miss Gee—Harpy and Kraken.

There will be no weekly homework set.  Instead, there are still some expectation of children’s work at home:

– We would like your child to read daily and to have this recorded in their reading diaries. These should also be signed by parents.

–If you have internet access – the children can also access Bug Club from home. This does count as them ‘reading’ daily and can be recorded in their reading diaries.

–To practise the year 4/5 statutory spellings that will be coming home half termly.

Our PE days this year are Monday, Wednesday and Friday.  However, kit should be in school everyday of the week.  If your child has their ears pierced, they should be taught how to remove them. We are not allowed to remove them at all.  If your child has only just had them pierced, then we ask that they have their own supply of ear-tape in their PE bags for their own personal use.  Also, it is important to note that if your child wears trainer style shoes to school, then they should have another pair of trainers for sport lessons.   This is a matter of health and safety.

Bug Club

We are continuing to subscribe to Bug Club this year.  The children made great progress as a result of their efforts to read the books online and answer the questions.  It is not just for reading, it is for grammar and spelling too.  The children will have access to Bug Club in school but they can also access it from home too.
